Netflix drops trailer for Adelaide sci-fi film I Am Mother in the US

The first trailer for the Adelaide-made sci-fi film I Am Mother — starring Academy Award winner Hilary Swank has been released.

Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Adelaide-made sci-fi film I Am Mother in the US, where it will begin streaming on June 7 — more than a month before its Australian cinema release.

Directed by Grant Sputore, about 90 per cent of the project was filmed at the South Australian Film Corporation’s Adelaide Studios in Glenside, with much of the visual effects work completed by Rising Sun Pictures.

I Am Mother was shown as a work-in-progress at last year’s Adelaide Film Festival and premiered at Sundance in the US in January, but won’t be available on Netflix in Australia yet and doesn’t hit local cinema screens until July 18.

Australian actress Rose Byrne voices the title robot, which was created by New Zealand’s WETA Workshop, best known for its work on Avatar and The Lord of The Rings films.

Set in a bunker after an extinction-level event has wiped out humanity, Mother has been put in charge of 63,000 human embryos and selects one “Daughter” (played by young Danish actor Clara Rugaard) to harvest and raise.

However, Mother and Daughter’s laboratory-bound life is upset when a stranger (US actress Hilary Swank) arrives at the bunker — and it looks as if much Terminator-style turmoil ensues.
