Truth behind John Farnham’s iconic song featuring in viral Kamala Harris ad

John Farnham’s iconic Aussie anthem has formed the backing track to a viral Kamala Harris campaign video, but all is not as it seems.

Truth behind John Farnham's moment in viral US election ad

Australian fans have reacted in delight after John Farnham’s iconic song was used as the backing track in a campaign video endorsing Kamala Harris for US President.

Farnham, 75, is the talk of X Thursday morning. His name is trending on the social media platform thanks to an “inspirational” political ad going viral in the US, which is set to the local musician’s 1986 anthem You’re The Voice.

The ad has fooled many into believing it was created by the official team for the Democratic Party. Sadly, California-born Ms Harris didn’t personally pick the Aussie classic as her leading song choice. It was, in fact, put together by a passionate US politics follower under the handle ‘Truth Matters’, who has garnered more than 95,000 views on the two-minute long clip.

Regardless of its origins, many have been left moved by the video, which kicks off with a show reel of Donald Trump’s biggest gaffes, before transitioning into a theme of unity as the beloved pub classic swells beneath footage of Ms Harris, who is taking over as the party’s presidential candidate after US President Joe Biden announced he was standing down in July.

“What a superb use of our very own John Farnham’s epic anthem,” one user wrote. “As Aussies, we’re stoked to see our favourite song put to good use, America! Go get in done in November!”

“Great to hear the Aussie anthem I grew up with being used: You’re The Voice by John Farnham. Makes my Australian-American heart happy,” another said.

“This is so good, perfect soundtrack. Thank you John Farnham,” a third wrote.

“When you see John Farnham trending, your heart stops & then you see Kamala Harris has used You’re The Voice in her campaign ad & your heart swells with pride,” another added, continuing, “Such an amazing ad & using a man I have loved my whole life.”

“Kamala Harris uses John Farnham’s ‘You’re The Voice’ and now my happy Australian heart is crying with joy,” another chimed in.

“Wow, just wow, what a great ad,” added another user.

Farnham’s You’re The Voice did play a huge part in political causes closer to home last year, when with Farnham’s full support, it was used in a video advocating for the ‘Yes’ campaign in the 2023 Australian Indigenous Voice referendum.

The legendary Aussie performer has kept largely out of the spotlight in recent years following his cancer diagnosis, which he announced in August 2022.

At the time, Farnham released a statement revealing he was having a tumour removed from his mouth during a 12-hour surgical procedure.

A year later, in August 2023, Farnham confirmed he was cancer-free.

“It’s been a year since my first surgery and to be honest I’ve lost count as to how many other procedures there’s been since then,” he said in the statement.

“I’m sure someone’s kept track of them all – let’s just say, there’s been a few. But, I’m home now and I’m a very grateful and happy man. I’m sitting here in my living room lapping up the attention from my beautiful wife, Jill, my boys Rob and James and my mini Schnauzer, Edmund.

“It’s only now that I can start to appreciate and comprehend, for myself, how many messages of love and support have been sent to me over the past year. I don’t know what to say, other than thank you so very much. It honestly means the world to me. Thank you to everyone who took the time to write and send a message.

“Today is a special day. And I’m going to mark it by having a pizza – because I can! I can’t wait to see what might be next on the menu. Bring on 2024.”
