Harry Styles has kicked off his Australian tour with a bang by partaking in an Aussie tradition while opening the first night of his Love On Tour world tour.

Thousands of fans piled into HBF park in Perth on Monday night to see the 29-year-old heart-throb perform tracks off his latest album for the first time.

Styles thrilled fans when he took part in what is understood to be his first ever “shoey” – the ritual skolling of a beverage, usually alcoholic, out of a shoe.

“It’s been a dream of mine,” Styles said before pouring the contents of his drink bottle into his sneaker.

“This is one of the most disgusting traditions I’ve ever heard of.”

He then tipped the shoe up to his face and swallowed the drink in one big gulp to the sound of roaring cheers from fans.

The former One Direction star first stepped foot on Australian stages in 2011 and has likely been asked for more than a decade to take part in the nauseating tradition.

“I feel like a different person, I feel ashamed of myself,” he said with a laugh.

“It feels so personal, such an intimate moment to be shared with so many people.

“I’ll be discussing this with my therapist at length.”

Fresh off two wins at the 65th annual Grammy Awards including Album of the Year for Harry’s House, the hit maker created quite a stir at the Perth venue.

Hundreds of fans ignored a curfew set by HBF Park that restricted fans from queuing up outside overnight and began lining up from as early as 4am.

Event organisers warned fans that if they lined up any earlier than 8am they could risk having their ticket revoked and entry refused.

Just before 8am, the fans were told they had to move to another gate creating a stampede that left many distraught.

Nevertheless hundreds waited outside in the sweltering 36C heat to get a chance to stand in the front rows of the concert.

Styles was last in Australia to showcase his debut solo album Harry Styles in 2017.
