Coldplay breaks Australian record as 300,000 fans flood online ticket presale

UK rockers Coldplay have attracted more controversy ahead of their visit Down Under, with fans complaining they couldn’t get close to buying tickets to their stadium showcase when presales opened on Monday morning.

The band announced last week it would be taking its current world tour to Australia in November – for one show only in Perth.

It will be Coldplay’s first show in Australia since December 2016, when the British band played five stadium dates across those three cities.

Perth fans were shut-out during the previous tour, but this time, through an arrangement between Live Nation and Tourism WA, they’ll be the only Aussies to see the band as part of the Music of The Spheres World Tour.

Tickets are already being resold by buyers, with several posts appearing on social media in the hours after the online presale began.

Ten News reporter Dougal Wallace said Ticketmaster had confirmed a whopping 300,000 people were waiting in the queue for tickets this morning.

The figure marked a record for Australian online ticketing queues.

East coast Coldplay fans left angry messages last week, ridiculing the band’s decision to hold their only Aussie show in the country’s most remote city.

However, the band has now announced a second Perth show following the explosive demand.

The band made the announcement via social media on Monday morning following high demand for pre-sale tickets, PerthNow reported.

“Due to incredible demand, a second Perth show has been added for November 19,” a Twitter post said.

Australian multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Tash Sultana will be the main support for the event, along with Thelma Plum, who will each perform standalone sets before Coldplay takes the stage.

Queensland singer Amy Shark will be the support for the Saturday show.
