The Veronicas: ‘We’re dark, twisted and weird’

THE Veronicas, made up of twins Lisa and Jess Origliasso, admit they have a dark side and they like to exploit it.

THE Veronicas admit they have a dark side and they like to exploit it.

It’s perhaps one of the reasons they’ve been able to survive in the music industry for over a decade.

“It’s a tough industry, you’ve got to work very, very hard,” Lisa Origliasso told AAP.

But watching the latest music video the pair have released for their new single, In My Blood, it seems they have survival licked. The twins, Lisa and Jessica, clearly have an appetite for destruction in this video and, with the help of a hammer, no TV goes un-smashed, and no table goes unturned.

“We’re a little dark and twisted and weird. We like the weirder twisted side of art. We love our David Lynch you know,” Lisa said. Certainly, there are echoes of the surreal in this video that wouldn’t look out of place on a Lynch film set (Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive), but there’s something more innately offbeat about the sisters themselves.

“If there’s an awkward situation, Jess loves to just be in it,” Lisa said.

Her sister explains, life’s most awkward moments serve as her inspiration.

“As an artist, you don’t want to rush through any kind of feeling or thought or emotion that might come up. It’s like ‘Can I recreate this somehow’?” Jessica said.

They appear to exploit their perceived weirdness too.

“We were going for an otherworldly feel, you know a lot of people tell us we look like aliens anyway,” Jess said.

“I don’t know if it’s just because there’s two of us and we have big eyes, and long necks.” The first artwork for the single highlights this extraterrestrial side — both sisters stand naked and covered in purple glittery paint.

“It’s an alternate universe. It’s obviously not The Veronicas down at Woolies, it’s very much set in another time and space and we brought that concept over to the music video,” Lisa said. “We’ve played on that a lot. This is a dimension where time does not exist, it is this other space and I think that otherworldly feel has always been there.” Their sound has also evolved.

In My Blood, the first single from an album they hope to release in November, leans towards an electro-pop sound.

It’s worlds away from the emotional balladry of songs such as You Ruin Me from the self-titled record they released in 2014. “We’re bipolar kind of people creatively. I think sonically we are so unpredictable,” Lisa said.

“We can write that heartfelt emotional ballad but when you look at that footprint of The Veronicas it is very much in the pop-electronic realm ... lyrically this is a little deeper and more mature.”
