An Aussie band has released a big statement after their lead singer posted a selfie of her wearing a MAGA hat.

The Jezabels have released a statement on Instagram distancing themselves from their lead singer, Hayley Mary, after she made a political post on Instagram calling out the “super woke” Aussie music industry.

The statement from the other three remaining band members, Sam Lockwood, Heather Shannon and Nik Kaloper, seemed to swipe at Mary’s political views.

In a lengthy post, the band explained that they formed when they were university students and had always bonded over their “grievances with the status quo” and that their differences made them a “unifying force” to be reckoned with.

“The Jezabels aspired to create moments of hope and beauty. Music that might offer some people respite in facing their day-to-day challenges in this challenging world,” the statement read.

The band said that they got the most joy from hearing from their Queer fans how their music helped them through “tough” periods.

“We still are and always will be inspired by those who struggle. People who quietly and tirelessly work to improve the conditions of the less well-off or those looking to assert their identity in response to prejudice.”

“We abhor the language of the far-right and see through their grotesque attempts to moralise our free speech.”

“The struggle continues with love, despair and hope, Heather, Nik and Sam.”

The band’s statement, which they posted to Instagram, also had the comments turned off, and it comes after Mary’s divisive statement on Instagram.

She posted a selfie wearing a MAGA hat and then wrote a lengthy statement condemning the misinformation bill in Australia.

The bill aims to reduce the spread of harmful disinformation in digital communications, but Mary describes it as “suppressing freedom of speech” and claims that it could impact people’s human rights.

She also said she has lived with “self-censorship” in the “super woke music industry”, but she wanted to share her views.

“Cancel me! Cancel my shows if you like,” she wrote.

“The MAGA hat was for shock value,” she told Herald Sun.

“Without it, it would have been a very dry post about a Misinformation Bill … that no-one would have seen or discussed.”

According to the singer her MAGA moment has sparked industry-wide outrage, and she claims it has caused her to be “cancelled.”

“The fallout was everything you could imagine. I probably no longer have a music career in the way that I knew it,” she said.

“I’ve lost some friends, though I hope that’s temporary. I’ve lost some of the infrastructure of my business; publicity, band members, crew members, a show, my album launch, some revenue and quite a few followers.”

The Jezabels formed in 2007 and went on to enjoy a hugely successful career as a band, winning an ARIA Music Award, an Australian Music Prize and three Australian Independent Record Awards.
