GUNS N’ Roses hit the stage at Coachella on Saturday night, headlining their first outdoor festival together in 23 years.

But unfortunately for injured frontman Axl Rose, he had to do the entire set sitting down — not exactly how fans of the rocker remember his energetic performances.

Just weeks ago, Rose managed to break his foot while performing at Los Angeles’ Troubadour during the band’s first reunion show, rendering him unable to walk. So to compensate, the 54-year-old sat perched atop a throne loaned to him by none other than Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl.

Grohl used the legendary throne, complete with circles of light and wings made of guitar necks, last year when he broke his leg. The adorned contraption, which resembled something from Game of Thrones, moved forward and backward, but that was about it.

Unable to bust out his signature serpentine dance moves, Rose was limited to swaying about in his throne as he belted out hits like Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, Sweet Child O’ Mine and Live and Let Die, proving he hadn’t lost his incredible vocal range. He even managed several outfit changes throughout the set — somehow.

Guns N’ Roses, now consisting of Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan, minus Izzy Straddling and Steven Adler, delivered an impressive two-and-a-half hour performance, playing right up until Coachella’s curfew of 1am. They delivered three encore songs, a fireworks display, and a surprise guest — AC/DC guitarist Angus Young.

“Since I can’t run around for you, we’re gonna bring out a friend, put a little life into things for us,” Rose told the pumped up crowd.

Young, wearing shorts as always, emerged with his guitar and bounced around on stage, performing two AC/DC songs with the band — Whole Lotta Rosie and Riff Raff — before disappearing backstage.

Unfortunately for GnR, they had to follow massive acts such as Ice Cube and Disclosure, who slayed the main stage earlier in the evening. Try as they might, the relatively young Coachella crowd wasn’t exactly feeding off the 80s nostalgia (probably because many weren’t even alive during the band’s glory years) proving what many festival-goers feared when the line-up was announced, it was a weird fit for the annual music festival.

Interestingly, just hours before GnR’s Coachella set, news broke that Axl Rose will step in as frontman for AC/DC’s European Tour which starts next month, replacing their longtime frontman Brian Johnson who was forced to quit due to risk of total hearing loss.

The band’s official statement reads: “We are dedicated to fulfilling the remainder of our touring commitments to everyone that has supported us over the years, and are fortunate that Axl Rose has kindly offered his support to help us fulfil this commitment.”
