WALKING along the red carpet launch of Eurovision Song Contest minutes ahead of Aussie entrant Guy Sebastian was another Aussie accent — albeit from within the anArmenian team.
Sydney opera singer Mary-Jean O’Doherty is half Australian and half Armenian-Greek which she said has given her torn allegiances for the biggest singing contest in the world this year being held in Vienna.
“I am so proud of Australia this year, I am so proud of Guy it is amazing, it is amazing,” she said, adding she didn’t think she would split the votes from Australia.
“You know my father is Australian heritage and I love my mother’s country so much so I support both definitely.”
She wished Sebastian and Australia well but urged Aussies to please support Armenia too.
“Everyone follow your heart,” she said before adding Armenians would support Australia if Australia did likewise and supported them.
Mary was personally selected to perform by Rita Sargsyan, the first lady of the country and her group is multinational Armenian native Inga Arshakyan, Vahe Tilbian from Ethiopia, American Tamar Kaprelian, Stephanie Topalian from Japan and French-born Essaï Altounian.
