A MAN has died at yesterday’s Defqon. 1 music festival in Sydney — the second death at the festival in three years.
A MAN has died at the Defqon. 1 dance music festival — the second death at the festival in three years.
Police said the 26-year-old man from the southern NSW town of Albury died after being found unconscious in a tent at the festival, at Penrith’s International Regatta Centre, about 11pm.
The man’s friends gave him first aid until paramedics arrived and he was rushed to Nepean Hospital, where he died.
Investigators are now working to determine whether drugs were a factor in the man’s death.
It is the second time a person has died at the annual Defqon music festival since it launched in Australia seven years ago.
In 2013, a 23-year-old man died after telling Nepean hospital staff he had taken three pills during the festival. He suffered multiple seizures and cardiac arrests.
Police at the time warned partygoers of a particularly bad batch of pills with a horse head logo on them.
Detective Inspector Grant Healey from Penrith police warned drug-takers that it was friends and family who were left to deal with the aftermath of drug-related incidents.
“(Friends and family) live with the scars for the rest of their life,” he told reporters today.
“Quite often they are the ones doing first aid, watching their friends pass away. So if you’re taking those drugs, just remember they don’t just affect you.”
Police said many people were not listening to their continued warnings about illicit drugs.
“People are dying from taking drugs,” Inspector Healey said.
“People have got to realise if you put something in your mouth, you don’t know what it is, it can kill you.”
He said festivals and dance parties weren’t the problem.
“They have got a no drug policy, so it’s adults making really poor adult decisions,” he said.
“It’s people making poor adult decisions that are the problem.
Police ran an operation targeting drug use at this year’s event, arresting four people for drug supply. Two people were caught with 46 pills believed to be MDMA.
Nine festival-goers were taken to Nepean Hospital by paramedics.
The two-day rave-style music festival hosts more than 100 acts across seven stages.
