22-year-old student Bharti Shahani dies in hospital after Astroworld crowd surge
A 22-year-old woman has died in hospital from ‘horrific injuries’ after being caught in the horror crowd surge at Astroworld Festival.
The death toll of the Astroworld Festival crowd surge has risen to nine after a 22-year-old Texas university student lost her battle with “horrific injuries” overnight, according to a lawyer for the family.
Student Bharti Shahani had attended the festival with her sister and cousin when she was caught up in the fatal stampede. She had been on life support in hospital since the festival.
Doctors had declared Bharti was showing no sign of brain activity, with her family faced with the difficult decision of what to do next.
Her cousin Mohit Bellani had previously told US news station ABC13 of the terrifying moment during Travis Scott’s set: “Once one person fell, people started toppling like dominos. It was like a sinkhole. People were falling on top of each other.
“There were like layers of bodies on the ground, like two people thick. We were fighting to come up to the top and breathe to stay alive.”
After escaping the stampede, both Mohit and Bharti’s sister, Namrata Shahani, lost their phones and couldn’t find Bharti.
“Once we let go of her hand, the next time we saw her, we were in the ER,” Namrata told ABC13.
Bharti was given CPR in an ambulance by first responders and taken to Houston Methodist Hospital, the New York Post reported.
She had been in critical condition and on a ventilator since the night of the concert.
According to the New York Post, Bharti’s parents had searched for her at several Houston area hospitals before she was found.
“They took us to her room, and she was bleeding and on a ventilator. Me and my wife were too shocked. We can’t even stand in there,” Bharti’s father, Sunny Shahani, told ABC13.
After doctors told the family she had no brain activity, Bharti’s family said they were still determining what to do next.
The tragic news bring the Astroworld disaster death toll to nine. Dozens more people were hospitalised and a 9-year-old boy still remains on life support.
Rapper Travis Scott is facing numerous lawsuits for his role in the incident, including one filed by the parents of the 9-year-old.
