Meat Loaf, Daryl Somers and Kylie Minogue ... they’re just some of the grand final entertainers who ruined our big games

FROM Meat Loaf to Kylie Minogue, which singers stuffed up our grand final days with their horrific pre-game performances?

ON A handful of occasions, the AFL/NRL grand finals have been remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Forgotten are the heavy hits, the miraculous goals and nail-biting finishes.

Instead, all we recall is the woeful pre-match/half-time entertainers that leave us wondering if these supposed music professionals would even pass an X Factor audition.

Hopefully this year’s grand finals will be incident free.

The AFL has opted for the safe combination of the Birds of Tokyo and the Hunters & Collectors.

While the NRL has opted for the slightly riskier Livin’ la Vida Loca lad himself, Ricky Martin.

Hopefully, their names won’t be added to our list of the top five worst grand final performers we can remember.

Angry Anderson at the 1991 AFL grand final

It’s over 20 years later, and we’re still asking WTF? Angry Anderson confused a nation when he entered the ground in a blue ‘Batmobile’ and then belted out Bound for Glory. The video is priceless as the sportsmen on the ground laugh at first, then cringe when they realise they’d be guilty by association for the rest of their lives.

The cast of Neighbours at the 1986 NSWRL Grand Final

It’s the collective low-point in the careers of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce. For some reason the organisers decided it would be a good idea to ask the Ramsay street residents to sing the national anthem before the big game. When you watch the video, you’ll realise it was not a good idea. If you’re just like us, you’ll be wishing that Bouncer the dog leapt on stage and mauled their mullets, putting them (and us) out of our misery.

Daryl Somers at the 1987 AFL grand final

Where was Red Symons with his gong when we needed him? The Hey Hey host performed Waltzing Matilda and the national anthem, and he definitely proved that two wrongs don’t make a right.

Billy Idol at the 2002 NRL grand final

The blonde rock star entered the ground on a hovercraft, and that’s when the footy gods stepped in. Before he could even belt out one note, the power cut out. After five minutes of padding as they tried to fix the problem, his performance was cancelled, and the sporting public released a universal sigh of relief.

Meat Loaf at the 2011 AFL grand final

We don’t want to rehash what happened. Just watch the video and then observe a minute’s silence for rock.

Find out how our list stacked up against the Fox Sports Back Page.
