The craziest TikTok challenges and the ordeals they’ve caused

Jason Derulo has revealed the staggering amount of money he makes from social media posts.

The US musician, 34, who has 60 million followers on TikTok and a further 36 million on Instagram, said sponsored posts were his primary source of revenue during the Covid-19 pandemic, adding “besides the Kardashians” he was one of the “highest paid” people on the platforms.

Speaking on The TMZ Podcast this week, the Savage Love singer lifted the lid on exactly how much he charges to advertise products on his accounts.

“$US1.4 million ($A2.11 million) was the most I got for a single post,” Derulo candidly said.

The Voice Australia 2023 coach didn’t divulge on which company paid him the eye-watering amount.

“I can’t say, they would never work with me again,” he added.

Derulo built a prominent presence, particularly on TikTok, when the pandemic hit in March 2020, which started out by him sharing dance challenge videos to his then-six million followers.

The pop star quickly broadened his content to include funny skits, home life and cooking videos. Within the space of 12 months, he was dubbed the ‘King of TikTok’,

boasting nearly 47 million followers by March 2021.

Speaking to Variety that same year, Derulo shared how his rapid growth on socials was not the work of luck, rather, a calculated strategy to build his following.

“Everybody has a different audience, and you have to spend some time to get to know yours,” Derulo said.

“Then, the most important thing is good lighting, and use trending songs because they capture people’s interest instantly.

“Also, start your videos with a close-up — you have literally one second to stop people from scrolling, so what are you going to do with that second? Quick cuts keep people’s attention. And there’s tricks like having two or three sentences on the screen, but just long enough for people to read just the first one, so they have to watch the whole video again to read the rest of it. I have a million things like that.”

As for the highest paid social stars, the aforementioned Kardashians, mother and manager Kris Jenner previously revealed her daughters – including Kim Kardashian – charge a significant fee to plug brands online.

“My daughters are constantly getting offers to post something for a company, or a brand, on social media,” Jenner told CBS in 2019.

“So they’re – they have a fee for a post, or a fee for a story, a fee for Facebook, a fee for — you know — they have a fee schedule.

“I mean, it’s definitely six figures. And sometimes, if it’s Kim, or if it’s Kylie, it depends on what it really is.”

Social media and brand experts have estimated Kim, who has 362 million followers, can charge upwards of $US2 million for a single post.
