Guy Sebastian’s neighbour speaks outside court

Guy Sebastian’s neighbour claims police “bashed down his door” and were “completely overboard” when he was arrested for alleged intimidation.

The neighbour of pop star Guy Sebastian became emotional outside court as he shared the toll of his deteriorating health and compared his fight with the inaugural Australian Idol winner to an iconic film.

“It’s like another Castle,” 66-year-old Phillip Richard Hanslow said, referring to the 1997 Australian movie based on a David-vs-Goliath-type story.

The pair’s six-year feud reached an all-time high when Mr Hanslow allegedly confronted his neighbour outside their homes in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on January 23.

Sebastian sought an apprehended violence order at Waverley Local Court, meaning Mr Hanslow cannot contact the singer or enter his property. Magistrate Ross Hudson granted the order.

Mr Hanslow has been charged with stalking with the intent to cause fear of physical or mental harm and damaging property between 1:10pm and 1:40pm in an affluent street of Maroubra.

Police allege he threatened Sebastian and kicked over his fence.

During his court appearance, Mr Hanslow did not enter pleas, saying he had tried to get legal aid to represent him but no-one was available.

Magistrate Hudson adjourned the matter until March 9 to allow Mr Hanslow time to seek legal representation and to recover from a serious medical procedure.

Mr Hanslow told the court he needs to get his infected bowel operated on, which would involve a three-week recovery.

Outside court, Mr Hanslow told media how police “broke into the back of the house, smashed down the door and came into the house while I was on the toilet and arrested me and then took me off to Maroubra Police Station and I spent six-and-a-half hours in the lockup,” he said.

“All over just a heated argument with a neighbour which I think is clearly overboard.”

As well as his own deteriorating health, including a herniated disk in his back, sciatica and recurrent “brain fog,” Mr Hanslow said he is the full-time carer for his sick wife.

“I’m 66 — on my way out, I suppose — my body’s worn out from years and years of working as a tradie, so it’s not easy trying to deal with what’s in front of me, but you’ve got to just move forward and do your best,” he said.

“But I can’t cry about it — I’ve gotta keep moving forward”.

Away from the current court proceedings, Sebastian and Mr Hanslow have been reportedly fighting since Sebastian and his wife built their $3.1m “fortress” in 2016.

Police were reportedly notified to the most recent dispute when a neighbour allegedly witnessed the incident and contacted police.
