CANADIAN DJ Deadmau5, French band Phoenix and chart topping US hip hop act Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will headline next year's Future Music Festival.

The festival is returning to its modern electronic dance music roots, after expensive retro acts The Stone Roses and New Order failed to entice older punters to the national event over the past two years.

Also on next year's Future bill will be British act Rudimental, rapper Tinie Tempah plus Knife Party, Eric Prydz, Hardwell, Naughty Boy, ATB, Sven Vath, Markus Schulz, Baauer, Chuckie, Kaskade, Chase & Status, Paul Van Dyk, Dubfire, Bassjackers, Guy Gerber and local heroes Cut Copy, Timmy Trumpet and the Stafford Brothers.

Dates and venues are Brisbane's RNA Showgrounds on March 1, Perth's Joondalup Arena on March 2, Sydney's Royal Randwick Racecourse on March 8, Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse on March 9 and Adelaide Showgrounds on March 10.

Tickets will be priced at around $160 and go on sale October 1 from futuremusicfestival.com.au

The 2014 Future Music Festival will be the first with the involvement of Michael Gudinski's Frontier Touring.

Gudinski has distanced himself from the festival's previous owners Future Entertainment, who have gone into liquidation.

The promoter says it is a "new company" and has ditched the Summadayze New Year's Day event to focus on the rebooted Future Music Festival and also the underage Good Life events.
