BRITISH band Coldplay ended months of speculation by announcing they will head to Australia for a national tour.

The tour takes in the biggest venues the band have headlined in Australia so far.

The band will play only east coast dates in Australia.

Frontman Chris Martin said the band were itching to return Down Under. "It's such a special place for us," he said.

"These venues are pretty huge. The Aussie crowds are always incredible and we'll be bringing everything we've got.

"It's going to be big."

The opening acts have been hand-picked by Coldplay, including Melbourne band The Temper Trap and US band The Pierces, whose album was produced by Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman.

Coldplay's tour, in support of No.1 album Mylo Xyloto, has been super-sized to fit into stadiums.

A Coldplay presale for Visa card holders starts on May 17. See visaentertainment.com.au for full details.

Tickets from Ticketmaster start at $99, and will go on sale on May 25 at 9am.
