US music star Carrie Underwood has been savaged by fans after she confirmed years of rumours about her political beliefs with one surprise announcement.

The American Idol winner has enjoyed huge success in the States with songs such as Before He Cheats, but in recent years her career has taken somewhat of a commercial downturn.

In recent years fans have speculated about the three-time Grammy winner’s personal politics, however, she insisted as recently as 2019 that she made sure to keep her cards close to her chest.

“I feel like more people try to pin me places politically,” she told The Guardian.

“I try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins. It’s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it’s black and white. And it’s not like that.”

However, that all changed when Underwood announced on Monday that she would be performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration.

“I love our country and am honoured to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” she said in a statement on Monday.

“I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

Sadly for Underwood, her statement didn’t go down well with the majority of her online fanbase, who quickly took to social media to blast her decision.

“Carrie Underwood is preforming at Trump’s inauguration so I’m blocking her on all apps and boycotting all her music,” ranted one fan.

“I don’t think ABC realises how much Carrie Underwood just destroyed viewership for the new season of American Idol,” commented another, referencing the star’s upcoming role on the panel of the singing competition where she’s replaced Katy Perry.

“Carrie Underwood Jesus is about to take the wheel and drive your career right into the toilet,” remarked another.

A fourth hit out, writing: “Imagine all the little girls and young women who idolise Carrie Underwood, and she comes out in support of that man.”

“Carrie Underwood is trash,” insisted another.

For Trump’s 2017 inauguration, performers included America’s Got Talent runner-up Jackie Evancho, Toby Keith and band 3 Doors Down, who faced a backlash from fans. Guitarist Chris Henderson later defended it as “a one-in-a-lifetime chance to do something for your country”.

Stars who publicly declined to perform included Moby, Kiss, Idina Menzel and British singer Charlotte Church.
