Australian rapper Iggy Azalea has spoken out about her experience working with Britney Spears, making disturbing allegations about behaviour she claims to have witnessed from Spears’ father and conservator, Jamie.

Azalea teamed up with Britney for the 2015 single Pretty Girls, and the pair promoted the song with a big budget music video and a performance at the Billboard Music Awards.

In a statement posted to Twitter today and tagged #FreeBritney, Azalea supported Spears’ recent court claims that her conservatorship is an “abusive” situation.

“It’s basic human decency to at the very least remove a person Britney has identified as abusive from her life. This should be illegal,” she wrote.

“During the time we worked together in 2015, I personally witnessed the same behaviour Britney detailed in regards to her father last week and I just want to back her up and tell the world that: She is not exaggeration [sic] or lying.

“I saw her restricted from even the most bizarre and trivial things: Like how many sodas she was allowed to drink. Why is that even necessary?” Azalea continued.

“Her father conveniently waited until literally moments before our BMAs performance when I was backstage in the dressing room and told me if I did not sign an NDA he would not allow me on stage. The way he went about getting me to sign a contract, sounded similar to the tactics Britney spoke about last week in regards to her Las Vegas show.”

“Britney Spears should not be forced to coexist with that man when she’s made it clear it is negatively impacting her mental health.

‘This is not right at all,’ she concluded.

Azalea’s public statement comes a few days after she told fans she was trying to support Britney in a way that was “helpful and mindful”.

“Britney has said in her own words, she’s embarrassed to even share this with the world,” she wrote on June 26. “If she needed me to speak on her behalf, that message has been delivered to her.

“I’ve done what I’m supposed to do, I’ve reached out. I’m not supposed to be mindlessly telling you all whatever was happening because half of these people are just here for entertainment not to help.”

Spears made a series of shocking allegations about life under her 13-year conservatorship during a rare court address last week. Speaking for 24 minutes, the star railed against her family and demanded the arrangement, which was put into place after her 2007 public breakdown, be ended.

Addressing the court, Britney alleged she was told her own management would sue her if she didn’t follow through with a planned 2018 international tour.

“If I don’t do this tour, I will have to find an attorney, and by contract my own management could sue me if I didn’t follow through with the tour. He handed me a sheet of paper as I got off the stage in Vegas and said I had to sign it. It was very threatening and scary. And with the conservatorship, I couldn’t even get my own attorney. So out of fear, I went ahead and I did the tour,” she claimed. She didn’t specify in court whether “he” was referring to her father, manager, attorney or someone else.

Lawyers for Jamie Spears this week said in a court filing that he was “greatly saddened to hear of his daughter‘s difficulties and suffering” and ”believes there must be an investigation into those claims”.

But today has seen a new setback for Britney, with Variety reporting that the judge has denied a months-old request by Spears’ lawyer to remove her father, Jamie Spears, as her sole conservator.

“Today’s paperwork … reiterates the judge’s decision to not remove the elder Spears from the pop star’s conservatorship,” Variety reports, also noting that while the request was filed months ago, it was denied after the judge heard Britney’s impassioned testimony last week.
