A Gold Coast musician has died in his sleep just hours after playing a gig with his band. Guitarist Benaiah Fiu, 32, had performed at a Burleigh Heads venue with his band, Strange Motel, last Friday night before being found dead by his mother the following morning.

No cause of death has been confirmed.

Throughout his music career, Mr Fiu had founded several bands including Strange Motel, Paper, Sex Drive and Friction Control.

Friction Control posted a tribute on Instagram featuring a slide show of pictures following news of his death.

“Until we meet again. Rest easy brother,” the caption said.

Meanwhile, his “devastated” sister, Hanisi, also took to social media to pay tribute to her “baby brother”.

“On Saturday, January 13, we said goodbye to my baby brother Benaiah,” Ngahuai said.

“I’m devastated and in so much pain. It was a tragic morning, emotions are high, tears are constant, but there is so much love for Benaiah and the life he lived.

“Benaiah lived such a full amazing life. He loved so deeply, played, sung and wrote so passionately, was so deeply intentional, had so much influence, and did whatever he wanted.

… It’s an honour and a privilege to be your sister. I’m not ready to say goodbye.”

The day before he died, Mr Fiu shared a post on Facebook promoting what would be his final gig.

“Tonight! We got Tapered LTD, Strange Motel, Boiling Hot Politician and Antenna rockin out from 7pm onwards down at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse,” he wrote.

Tributes have since been posted underneath, including a friend who shared memories from their childhood.

“RIP Benny! Never forget the primary school days building jumps, getting up to mischief, and going to church with you and your family! Rest easy brother.”

Another added that he would “always be remembered.”

Mr Fiu’s funeral is being held in Robina on Monday, with a “paddle out” in honour of his “love for the ocean” three days later.
