AUSTRALIAN music dominated this year's Triple J Hottest 100 countdown.

Hippy brother and sister outfit Angus & Julia Stone topped the world’s biggest music poll with their single Big Jet Plane.

The song, originally released as an Angus Stone solo track two years ago, also won ARIA’s Single of the Year last year.

Four out of this year’s Top 5 songs were by Australian acts – Melbourne’s Little Red at No.2 with Rock It, Perth’s Birds of Tokyo with Plans at No.4 and folk act Boy & Bear’s cover of Crowded House’s Fall At Your Feet made No.5.

The odd song out was UK electro act Ou Est Le Swimming Pool at No.3 with Dance The Way I Feel.

The band’s lead singer Charles Haddon took his own life last year.

Singer Cee Lo Green polled at No.7 with F--- You; tipped by many to top the poll considering how much Triple J listeners love profanity and novelty songs.

Over half the 100 songs selected by listeners this year were by Australian artists.

The radio station poll, held annually, had 155,22 voters from 152 countries making 1.26 million votes.

Several acts scored three songs a piece – Megan Washington, Birds of Tokyo, Gypsy & the Cat, Mark Ronson, Gorillaz, the Arcade Fire and Pendulum.

Pendulum’s drum 'n’ bass remix of the ABC news theme made No.11 in the countdown.

Angus & Julia Stone’s Down the Way was the highest-selling Australian album of 2010 and won Album of the Year at last year’s ARIA awards.

The siblings are currently touring the country with the Big Day Out festival.

The win comes after the duo took out several ARIA awards last year.

Triple J says of Big Jet Plane: "It’s a wistful song about unrequited love and air travel. Simple, stripped back and breezy; this ballad is timeless."

The pair also made it in the rankings at No.62 with Hold On.

It is the first time since 2006 a local act has taken out the Australia Day countdown, in which hundreds of thousands of people register to vote, the ABC reports.
