Work is under way on a quirky new film Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, based on the classic tale

HERE’S your first look at a quirky new film under way, which is basically a version of the famous story Pride and Prejudice but with zombies.

TAKE one classic Jane Austen romance tale, add some brain-eating zombies and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a bizarre blockbuster film.

The upcoming filmPride and Prejudice and Zombies is pretty much what the name implies — and it looks awesome.

Work is well under way on the film, which stars formerDoctor Wholead Matt Smith as the wealthy wife-seeker Mr Collins and Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey in a so-far undisclosed part.

The script is based on the popular 2009 novel of the same name, which has earnt a strong following for its clever reimagining of the original story, and spawned a swag of other gory rewrites of the classics.

In the film, due for release in the middle of next year, the famous Bennett sisters juggle their searches for love with a violent fight against an army of zombies.

The normally prim and proper girls arm themselves with an array of weapons to take on the monsters, but there’s still a heavy dose of complicated romantic liaisons between the different classes of characters.

Entertainment Weekly today released a first-look image of the some of the cast, showing the Bennett girls brandishing weapons, ready for battle.

British actor Sam Riley, known for his role in Maleficent, will portray the character of Mr Darcy — made famous by Colin Firth in the 1995 TV miniseries Pride and Prejudice.

Lily James, who played Lady Rose in the hit period television drama Downton Abbey, will play strong-willed Elizabeth Bennett.

Keira Knightley played Elizabeth in the 2005 film adaptation of Austen’s much loved story.

And Australian rising star Bella Heathcote has a role in the quirky horror remake as one of the Bennett sisters.
