Why we’ll have to wait a while for Crazy Rich Asians sequel

Bad news for Crazy Rich Asians fans. The sequel is coming — but not for quite a while.

Fans of the wildly popular Crazy Rich Asians are going to have to wait a while to find out what happens next.

The 2018 rom-com, based on the book by the same name, was the first movie by a major Hollywood studio to feature a majority Asian American cast, and made a staggering $323 million at the box office globally.

Plans for the sequel, reportedly based on the follow-up novel China Rich Girlfriend, were first discussed in August, but according to Constance Wu — who starred in the movie as Rachel Chu — fans are in for a lengthy wait.

“I don’t know much about the production side of things,” Wu said at Vulture Festival in Los Angeles. “But I know that (Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu) wants to direct the next one, and all next year he’s directing In The Heights.”

The movie was a phenomenal success at the box office.

Wu, 36, also admitted she’d almost turned down the part of Rachel when she was first approached.

“I actually let the part go, because I met with (Jon M. Chu) and I was like, ‘I really want to do this, but I can’t, because I’m under contract with my show and we shoot in the fall,’” she said.

The actor has been playing Jessica Huang in the comedy series Fresh Off The Boat for five seasons.

“I was like, ‘Cool, another actor will get that and I will be 100 per cent behind her because I want there to be more Asian actors out there,’” Wu added. “So I kind of let it go.”

But despite her words, Wu had trouble letting it go. She decided to email the director, telling him: “Listen, I know the schedules don’t work out, whoever you end up putting in the movie. I want to support you, but I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you what this means to me and why.”
