IT’S been widely reported that The Revenant was the most difficult film Leonardo DiCaprio has ever done.

But this new report may just take his suffering to a whole new level.

Drudge Report says DiCaprio was molested by a bear that attacks him in one of the film’s pivotal scenes.

“The new movie ‘REVENANT’ features a shocking scene of a wild bear raping Leo DiCaprio!” the article says.

“The bear flips Leo over and thrusts and thrusts during the explicit mauling.

“He is raped — twice!”

The author ads that the “explicit moment” from Oscar winning Birdman director Alejandro Inarritu has caused much controversy in early screenings, and some people in the audience “escaped to the exits” when the scene occurred.

Details on the film are scarce as reviews have been embargoed until closer to the release date, but there has already been suggestions that the report is inaccurate.

The Revenant is based on Michael Punke’s 2002 novel of the same name, inspired by the life of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass.

In the book Glass in attacked by a female bear who is protecting her cubs and while it is indeed and intense and terrifying scene, there is nothing sexual about the attack in the narrative.

A film critic from Vulture who has seen the movie also denied the claims.

“There is one point where the bear sort of spoons Leo,” he writes, before adding “take my word for it: While a great many horrible things happen to Leo in The Revenant, bear rape is not among them.”

Either way, DiCpario said the film, which is believed to offer him his best chance at an Oscar yet, was one of the most gruelling roles he has ever played.

“[Those scenes] — among many other sequences — were some of the more difficult things I’ve ever had to do in my entire career” the 40-year-old actor told Yahoo Movies.

“But the end result is going to be one of the most immersive experiences audiences will ever have with what it would be like to come face-to-face with an animal of that magnitude that is incredibly primal.

“It is absolutely startling and shocking, and it is the closest thing to documentary filmmaking — but in a completely stylised way that a lot of people never experienced.”

DiCaprio also gets naked and sleeps inside a dead horse to keep warm in another dramatic scene.

Inspired by true events, The Revenant is described by filmmakers as “an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit.

“In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter and warring tribes in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.”

DiCaprio has been nominated for an Academy Award five times before — for his performances in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator, Blood Diamond and The Wolf of Wall Street, but so far the coveted statuette has eluded him.

The Revenant, which also stars Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson will be released in Australia on January 7.
