If you love gravity-defying stunts and non-stop action, the long-awaited movie adaptation of video game franchise Uncharted has it in spades.

Or that’s certainly what the newly released trailer has promised.

Starring Tom Holland as parkour-gifted young fortune hunter Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his wisecracking mentor Sully, the movie looks to be a globetrotting action-adventure in search of “the greatest treasure never found”.

The movie will serve as an origin story for Drake, the central character of the Uncharted video games. In the franchise, he is said to be a descendent of explorer Sir Francis Drake.

The games franchise from developer Naughty Dog was first released in 2007 and went on to become one of the most popular titles on Sony’s PlayStation consoles. There were four main games and a series of spin-off projects.

The movie adaptation, directed by Zombieland’s Reuben Fleischer, is said to take its story from the fourth game in the series, A Thief’s End.

The Drake character is known in the games for his prodigious physical skills in getting in and out of challenging spaces. Holland’s casting plays well into those expectations with the Spider-Man actor renowned for his stunt skills, although he doesn’t do all of his own stunts in his films.

Uncharted also stars Antonio Banderas as the villain, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Tati Gabrielle and Sophia Ali.

Uncharted started principal photography in March 2020 in Germany and was shut down the same week due to the covid pandemic. It resumed production in July and filmed until October. Banderas tested positive to covid in August and had to step away for a few weeks.

A film version has been in various levels of production since 2008 with directors including David O. Russell, Shawn Levy, Travis Knight and Neil Burger attached at previous points.

The adaption has been in production for so long that Wahlberg was originally slated to play the younger Drake character rather than Sully.

Nolan North voiced the characters in the video games.

Uncharted will be in cinemas on February 17.
