Imagine if the New Zealand couple’s office sex romp, caught on camera, was nothing but a clever marketing stunt for upcoming film Fifty Shades of Grey.

That’s one of the rumours doing the rounds in our neighbouring country, where we’ve been told the fallout is like nothing anyone could have predicted.

The timing couldn’t be more spot on, with the hotly anticipated film adaptation of the best-selling book hitting cinemas worldwide as early as next week.

The scandal has now made headlines around the world, thanks to steamy photos and video footage captured by pubgoers on their smartphones across the road.

Since news of the rompers’ act became common knowledge in most households, there has been widespread heated debate over whether the busted pair deserve any sympathy, if they should be sacked, and more so, who was mostly in the wrong here.

The unfortunate incident certainly hints at the Fifty Shades story, Christian Grey seduces the younger Anastasia Steele in E.L James’ wildly popular trilogy.

It would be a stroke of brilliance by Christchurch insurance firm Marsh if it was a publicity stunt. As one Twitter user pointed out, it’s sure managed to get people interested in insurance.

Of course, logic tells us that our imaginations are running away with us. The wife reportedly saw the pictures on Facebook and hasn’t stopped crying since, while the fiance has now come out and declared that he and his partner actually split up six months ago, wiping his hands of the whole thing.

The man, known as Joshua, told the Edge radio station in New Zealand on Thursday that, while he feels bad for his ex, “it’s really got nothing to do with me”.

Unless the wife and the fiance are in on the act as well? OK, too far.

Fifty Shades of Grey, which stars Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, is set to be the raunchiest movie made in over a decade, with 20 minutes of sex in its 100 minutes running time.

Bottom line, it probably doesn’t need any more publicity.
