FINALLY there’s a disaster movie that isn’t disastrous to watch.
Mark Wahlberg stars in the upcoming movie, Deepwater Horizon, and from all reports it’s an absolute ripper.
The movie is based on the 2010 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico that killed 11 workers and injured 17.
Wahlberg plays oil rig worker Mike Williams in the film and had the man himself on set to guide him every step of the way.
“I don’t think I’d have been able to do it without Mike,” he said to Den Of Geek.
“Mike was my eyes and my ears with everything, and he held us to a very high standard. I relied on him for all the information I needed to make this character believable.”
Critics are raving about the film, with Vanity Fair calling it “sober and smart, a technical thriller that rattles with tension and anger”.
“Deepwater Horizon immediately enters the canon of great disaster films,” the site said.
Here’s what some other critics have said:
“This year’s ultimate guilty pleasure at the movies.” — New York Post
“It’s hard not to feel the gritty rescue scenes, be mesmerised by the flammable carnage or get belatedly enraged by the idiocy of oil-company bureaucracy.” — USA Today
“Deepwater Horizon is the most entertaining Hollywood disaster movie in years. I’m sorry — is that a terrible thing to say?” Village Voice
