THE new trailer for the latest instalment in the X-Men franchise has dropped, putting new faces on some old characters.

In the complicated timeline of the X-Men films, Apocalypse takes place before the original trilogy (X-Men, X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand), but after the other “origin” film (X-Men: First Class) and the old-school/new school crossover, X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, assumes the role of a young Jean Grey, the character played by Famke Janssen in the series’ original trilogy.

No stranger to desperate situations on Game of Thrones, Sophie Turner takes the pivotal role of Jean Grey in Apocalypse.

Alexandra Shipp portrays a young Storm (originally played by Halle Berry), Tye Sheridan plays a junior Cyclops (originally played by James Marsden) and Kodi Smit-McPhee assumes the role of Nightcrawler (originally played by Alan Cumming) in the new film.

Jennifer Lawrence returns as Mystique, alongside Michael Fassbender as Magneto, James McAvoy as Xavier, Nicholas Hoult as Beast and Rose Byrne (last seen in X Men: First Class) as Moira MacTaggert.

Bryan Singer, the director most closely identified with the franchise, has returned to the director’s chair for X-Men: Apocalypse.

The new film pits the protagonists against Apocalypse, the first mutant, born thousands of years ago, who has seemingly acquired godlike powers over the millennia. Oscar Isaac, who played Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, takes the role.

X Men: Apocalypse is set to open on May 27.
