STAR Wars fans have been treated to a new trailer and advance ticket sales, two months before the hotly anticipated film hits cinemas.

A new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted during half-time at the New York Giants v Philadelphia Eagles American football game in Philadelphia on Monday evening.

Star Wars also confirmed in a blog post on Sunday that tickets for the highly anticipated film would go on sale for theatres across the globe immediately following the trailer being played.

For Australian fans of the space saga, tickets are already on sale at Hoyts, Event and Reading cinemas.

The Force Awakens, the seventh film in the franchise, is one of the most anticipated movies of the year, with flurries of excitement accompanying each trailer launch. The second teaser trailer, which debuted in April, has more than 64 million views on YouTube to date.

The trailer follows three short teaser trailers that debuted on social media yesterday as well as a new poster which fgatures Harrison Ford, as Han Solo, and Carrie Fisher, who returns as Princess Leia, without her famous hair buns that once covered her ears.

While Luke Skywalker was absent, three new characters — Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron — take up a large portion of the poster.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in cinemas 17 December, 2015.
