Netflix releases fresh trailer for Marriage Story

Netflix is releasing one of the most anticipated movies of the coming months and it’s just given us a fresh look at it.

Netflix is throwing its weight and deep pockets behind several of its original movies over the next few months.

And one of the most anticipated is Marriage Story, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. Directed by Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha), Marriage Story won critical raves after its runs at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.

The movie was the runner-up to Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit for the People’s Choice Award at TIFF and has been generating considerable Oscar buzz, especially for lead Driver.

Netflix has just released a new trailer for Marriage Story, which will hit Netflix on December 6 but will be released in selected cinemas from November 14.

The movie is the story of Charlie (Driver) and Nicole (Johansson), young creative couple who go through a gruelling divorce and the custody fight over their son.

The first two teaser trailers Netflix released for Marriage Story were cut from each lead’s perspective with Charlie narrating what he loves about Nicole and vice versa.

This fresh trailer gives audiences a much better sense of what to expect from Marriage Story, dealing with not just their relationship up until then but the bruising fight of separation. It also glimpses supporting characters played by Laura Dern, Alan Alda and Ray Liotta.

Marriage Story has been compared to Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman’s Kramer vs Kramer and is understood to be partly inspired by Baumbach’s own divorce from Jennifer Jason Leigh.

The film is Baumbach’s second collaboration with Netflix having previously made The Meyerowitz Stories for the streamer. Marriage Story is the fourth film Baumbach has made with Driver.

It’s shaping up to be a busy season for Driver whose movie The Dead Don’t Die was out recently and also has coming up The Report (in cinemas on November 14 and on Amazon Prime Video on November 29) and Star Wars Episode IX: Rise of Skywalker (in cinemas December 19).

Netflix is releasing a slate of its original movies in cinemas before their streaming debut, including four titles in Australia. In addition to Marriage Story, Netflix is releasing Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and Fernando Mereilles’ The Two Popes. The King , directed by David Michod, is in cinemas now and on Netflix on November 1.
