Netflix has officially ordered a long-awaited sequel to Happy Gilmore.

The 1996 comedy film starred Adam Sandler, who will return as the tempestuous hockey player-turned-golfer for Happy Gilmore 2.

The news was announced at the streamer’s upfront event in New York on Wednesday, though there was no information on fellow cast members, a plot line, writer or director.

It comes weeks after US actor Christopher McDonald – who played “villain” Shooter McGavin in the original film – said a sequel was in the works during an interview on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan radio show.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago … And he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2,” said McDonald before joking that the hosts may want to “cut that out” of the show.

“I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’” he added.

“So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

McDonald added he was “very, very pleased” with the script, though didn’t divulge any further detail.

Sandler, who was 29 when he made the first film, co-wrote Happy Gilmore under his Happy Madison production company.

It also starred Ben Stiller, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Kevin Nealon, and Rocky actor Carl Weathers, who died in February aged 76.

While it received mixed reviews among critics, the movie was a commercial success – produced on a budget of $US12 million before grossing $US41.2 million at the global box office.
