Mary Poppins sequel trailer drops
THE winds are blowing in from the east so you know what that means: Mary Poppins is coming back. Disney has released the first trailer for its sequel.
BATTEN down the hatches and secure the kites — the wind from the east is blowing this way.
The sequel to beloved childhood classic Mary Poppins is that much closer with Disney releasing the first proper trailer.
Set in the 1930s, 25 years after the original Julie Andrews film, the magical nanny returns to London to the Banks residence. It stars Emily Blunt as the stern but kind, and apparently ageless, Mary and will feature Dick Van Dyke in a cameo role.
The trailer shows the wind blowing as a kite (you know how they love a kite) flies down Cherry Tree Lane. A little boy is chasing it and with the help of Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), a lamplighter, they pull it back down. But it comes attached to a familiar, upstanding silhouette gliding through the air.
We cut to the Banks house where Jane (Emily Mortimer) and Michael (Ben Whishaw) are now adults and surprised but delighted to see Mary in their midst. Luckily for them, the house is already tidy and will require no musical inducement.
It also appears Mary Poppin’s vanity has not abated as the only front-facing shot we have of her is her reflection in the mirror.
According to details released by Disney, Mary Poppins returns to the Bankses after Michael and his three children suffer a personal tragedy (presumably the death of his wife). Along with Jack, said to be an apprentice of Bert’s, Mary also brings her cousin Topsy Turvy-Poppins, to be played by Meryl Streep.
The sequel will also star Julie Walters, Colin Firth and Angela Lansbury. Julie Andrews turned down a cameo role, not wanting to deflect attention away from Blunt’s performance.
The film is an original story based on P.L. Travers’ characters after the author wrote in her will she didn’t want another movie adaptation to be made from her books. The 1964 movie won five Oscars, including one for Andrews as Best Actress.
Mary Poppins Returns will be released in Australia on Boxing Day.
