LIAM Hemsworth suits up to help save the planet from alien nasties in the new trailer for Independence Day Resurgence.

THE aliens are back, bigger and meaner than ever in the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day.

That film was a huge hit, grossing over US$800 million at the box office and propelling Will Smith into a new level of stardom. It also picked up an Oscar for best visual effects.

Almost twenty years later, fans have been given their first look at the sequel, Independence Day Resurgence, due for release in June next year.

Many of the cast from the original resume their roles, including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch.

Will Smith has not returned, leaving room on the marquee for Aussie Liam Hemsworth, who takes the lead role of pilot Jake Morrison.

Independence Day — or ID4 as it was also called — was not known for the subtleties of its plot, and the sequel appears to tread similar ground.

“I spent 20 years trying to get us ready for this. We used their technology to strengthen our planet, but it won’t be enough,” Goldblum’s character states.

“This is definitely bigger than the last one,” he says later, neatly encapsulating the film’s premise — and its promise to fans.
