KRISTEN Stewart and Nicolas Hoult might be playing characters who explore their first love together in their new film Equals, but it was their difficult - and high profile - breakups that brought them together on screen.

Stewart had just come off the back of her split with Robert Pattinson, while Hoult was still reeling from his breakup with Hollywood darling Jennifer Lawrence.

“It was incredibly painful,” Stewart told The Daily Beast of the end of her relationship in May 2013. “Ugh, f***ing kill me.”

But she says that pain was exactly what gave her and her co-star the edge in their performance.

“It was a really good time for both of us to make this movie. Not all of my friends have been through what I’ve been through, or what some people have tasted at a relatively-speaking young age, and we were not expected to do anything. Everything that we did was explorative, and a meditation on what we already knew.”

As far as breakups go, Stewart’s wasn’t an easy one.

Photographs of her kissing her married Snow White and The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders made headlines around the world, leading to her split with Pattinson and his divorce with wife Liberty Ross.

Equally as difficult, but less scandalous, Hoult had also come off the back of his second breakup with Lawrence.

“We all felt akin by how much we’ve been through, and to utilise that is so scary,” Stewart continued of their ability to get into character.

“Usually you want to move on. But at least we could use some of that for some good. This movie was a meditation on firsts, and a meditation on maintaining, and a meditation on the ebbs and flows of what it’s like to love someone — your feelings versus your ideals, the bursting of bubbles, the shattering of dreams you thought were possible, and what you have to contend with as things get more realistic.” She finished up by musing, “Relationships: you just never f*cking know.”

Stewart also opened up about her “repulsive” first kiss.

“Yes, absolutely! It was horrible!” she said when he was asked if she remembered the first time she locked lips with someone. “It was so bad. It was fucking repulsive. I was 14 and it was gross. It was not good. [Laughs] But the first time something in you opens up and affects your entire body and has this control over you, it’s scary because there’s this chemical that’s released that you become addicted to. It literally feels like you don’t have free will anymore. I know that fucking feeling.”
