Justice League tangled in Superman moustache ‘fiasco’
OF ALL the things that could’ve derailed Justice League, you didn’t think it would be a moustache. Now Superman himself has entered the fray.
GUYS, this is a serious issue.
There are rumblings surrounding the upcoming superhero all-in movie Justice League and it’s all because of Superman’s face fuzz.
With more critical failures than successes under DC’s belt, the pressure for Justice League to get it right is mounting. And now, months after the main filming wrapped, everyone is heading back on set for reshoots which are reported to cost more than $US30 million.
Reshoots are not uncommon for big budget blockbusters, especially superhero movies, but they are a sign that not everything is A-OK.
The reshoots, now helmed by director Joss Whedon after Zack Snyder stepped down over family matters, involve recalling the actors back to duty. Some of them are already on other projects, including Superman actor Henry Cavill.
Cavill is currently shooting the gazillionth Mission: Impossible sequel and his character on that flick is sporting a big ol’ Tom Selleck. And because Mission: Impossible is with another studio (Paramount to Justice League’s Warner Bros.), the rumour mill is saying Cavill is not allowed to shave the moustache and it will have to be edited out in post-production.
Never has facial hair become such a contentious issue. How could Superman possibly be a paragon of virtue if you can’t gaze upon his smooth, chiselled face? Unthinkable.
After all, classic heroes don’t have faces obscured by hair, that’s the trademark of the villain (case in point: Dick Dastardly and Chuck Norris). Cavill is playing a villain in Mission: Impossible.
Today, Cavill has a smart-arse response for all the thumb-fidgeters over this “moustache fiasco”.
“There has been no discussion over whether to shave or not to shave for the JL reshoots, simply a relentless campaign to put an end to the seemingly inexorable conquest of this despotic ‘stache,” he wrote on Instagram.
“It is not a question of IF I should have — it is a question of how can we possibly be victorious against such a beast without bringing our own doom raining down upon us.”
He ends the missive with the hashtags “#HopeIsAllWeHaveLeft” and “#MoustacheImpossible”.
So the moustache battle may not be settled yet but at least we know Mr Cavill has a way with words.
