HAS Godzilla porked up a little over the years?
Fans of the mega-monster feel he’s turned into a bit of a fatty since we last saw him.
Japanese fans are particularly up in arms given Godzilla’s status as one of its most famous pop culture icons, first arriving in a 1954 sci-fi movie.
Some are so incensed they’ve taken to fat-shaming him on social media and suggesting he’s eaten too many “cheeseburgers” since appearing in the 2014 American reboot.
Others have called him a “calorie monster”, “Fatzilla” and suggested he’d done a “super-size me” during his US sojourn.
“Whichever way you look at it, he’s an American fatty,” posted one fan after promo images and trailers went online in Japan.
Godzilla is not only larger, but fans have pointed out he is fatter from the neck, right down to his bottom.
But the cast of the blockbuster were quick to come to the defence of their pudgy co-star.
“You know what?,” Aaron Taylor-Johnson told Access Hollywood of the “Fatzilla” jibes, “give him a chance. It’s been 60 years. … He’s allowed to pack on some pounds.”
Elizabeth Olsen who also stars in the movie agreed, telling fans to lay off him.
“I think it might have been like a bad poster or a bad angle on Godzilla. I feel like everyone needs to give him a break. He’s been sleeping in the ocean,” she said.
Ken Watanabe, who plays Dr. Ichiro Serizawa, said the beast is fine and he has been working out.
“Godzilla has great exercise in the Pacific Ocean, swimming. You know, no fat,” he said.
But Bryan Cranston who also scored a part admitted Godzilla had succumbed to the middle-aged spread since moving to the US from Japan.
“It’s the American-ized version of Godzilla. You know, he eats a little too much, needs to go on a diet.”
Godzilla opens in cinemas on May 15.
