IT WAS the surprise superhero hit of 2016, raking in more than $987 million worldwide at cinemas, making it the most successful R-rated film in movie history.

This May the merc with a mouth is back, with Ryan Reynolds reprising his self-aware superhero role in Deadpool 2.

While the first movie covered Deadpool’s origins story, the sequel will introduce a new nemesis and sidekicks for Reynolds’ character.

Deadpool gets a new nemesis this movie, with comic villain Cable, played by Josh Brolin, making his debut.

The X-Force will also be joining the movie and includes Domino (played by Zazie Beetz), Bedlam (Terry Crews) and Shatterstar (Lewis Tan).

New Zealand actor and Hunt For The Wilderpeople’s Julian Dennison will also play an unknown but crucial role in the series.

Returning from the first movie is Deadpool’s elderly roommate Blind Al (Leslie Uggams), taxi driver Dopinder (Karan Soni) and best friend Weasel (T.J. Miller).

WILL THERE BE A DEADPOOL 3?

Unfortunately not — according to Reynolds.

The actor told Entertainment Weekly another Deadpool sequel was unlikely, but he could appear as a supporting character in a future X-Force movie.

“I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that. I do see him as being a part of X-Force, obviously,” Reynolds said.

Deadpool 2 will hit Australian cinemas on May 16.
