Legendary Australian director George Miller has today given fans a first look at the much-anticipated next film in the Mad Max series.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga stars actress Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role of Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in the last Mad Max film Fury Road back in 2014.

Chris Hemsworth also stars in the film – looking virtually unrecognisable in the trailer, with long hair, a beard and what appear to be facial prosthetics.

Hemsworth had previously been spotted on the set of the film in 2022, in photos that had fans questioning if it was really him.

The film acts as a prequel of sorts to Fury Road, exploring the origins of the Furiosa character.

“As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus,” the film’s synopsis reads.

“Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will hit Australian cinemas on May 23, 2024. It will be the fifth film in a series that started with the ultra low budget classic Mad Max back in 1979, with Mel Gibson in the title role.

Another film is planned to follow Furiosa at a later date: Mad Max: The Wasteland.
