Cate Blanchett walks red carpet at Berlin Film Festival for Cinderella, jokes she’s ‘too old’ to play title role
SHE is one of Australia’s most celebrated actors. But Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett admits there is one role she is ‘too old’ to play.
SHE plays the wicked stepmother in Cinderella but Cate Blanchett was simply stunning at the movie’s red carpet premiere in Berlin.
Wearing a Givenchy gown, the Australian actor posed with co-stars Helena Bonham-Carter, who plays Cinderella’s fairy godmother, and former Downton Abbey actor Lily James (Cinderella) at the Berlin Film Festival.
Blanchett, 45, even helped James adjust her dress while posing for photographers and at one point, lost her high heel - or glass slipper.
Disney’s Cinderella, directed by Kenneth Branagh, screened out of competition at the festival and is due out in Australia on March 26.
Speaking in Berlin, Blanchett revealed she was often asked “are you playing Cinderella?” when she signed on to the movie.
“Certainly when you get to play someone with wicked in front of her name you know it’s going to be slightly fun but I was too old for Cinderella and not funny enough for the Fairy Godmother so I got what was left over,” Blanchett joked.
The live action Cinderella comes 65 years after Disney’s original animated movie was released.
Branagh said the story “continues to capture our imagination”.
Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden plays prince charming.
“It was just lovely to be part of something where it is really female dominated,” Madden told reporters in Berlin.
“The original animation was much more about this girl and a boy kind of saves the day and this version is so not like that.”
