Filming of Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh’s sex scene became so intense that the cameraman felt compelled to turn away.

The A-list duo play love interests in the upcoming romantic drama film We Live in Time, which is slated for release in cinemas in January.

Speaking about the movie at an event in New York on Saturday, Garfield, 41, shared details about one of their intimate scenes, revealing things became awkward when the actors went at it “longer” than they needed to.

“We do the first take of this very intimate, passionate sex scene, and it’s a closed set, which means it’s only me and Florence in the room together and the camera operator … A lovely man called Stuart,” Garfield began.

“He’s very, very polite and very sweet and gentle. The director’s in another room next door. And so the scene becomes passionate, as we choreographed it.”

The Spider-Man actor said he and Pugh were “feeling safe” in the moment, and so they let things “progress and carry on” despite feeling like the take was going “longer” than rehearsed.

“We get into it as it were, and we go a little bit further than we were meant to just because we never heard ‘cut’,” Garfield revealed.

“At a certain point, both of us, we’re both kind of telepathically saying to each other, ‘This definitely feels like a longer take.’

“I look up, and in the corner is Stuart and our boom operator. Stuart has the camera by his side and he’s turned into the wall.”

The pair didn’t hear the director call ‘cut’ during their intimate scene.

The film premiered to largely positive reviews at the at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It follows Pugh’s character Almut and Garfield’s Tobias, whose road to true love is hurt by a heart-wrenching medical diagnosis.

Speaking to British Vogue in September, 28-year-old Pugh said working on the emotional film inspired her to “find love” in her own life.

Pugh was previously in a relationship with Scrubs actor Zach Braff, 49, until their split in 2022.

The Little Women actress told the magazine she was now dating someone new, though kept their identity under wraps.

“I was at the right age for this movie to land,” Pugh said.

“I was going through a lot of weird stuff with relationships last year, and I think part of the story is to not be passive, is not to let things wash over you. I want to go and find love, and I want to have babies.

“I’m an absolute work maniac. I can see I’m exhausted. I suddenly woke up last year, and I was like, ‘I hate how much of my life I’ve missed.’ Yes, I want to have a career forever, but that’s not going to happen if I work myself into the ground.”
