LIAM Hemsworth has introduced the first trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire at the MTV Movie Awards.

The heart-throb revealed the teaser at a ceremony hosted by another Aussie, Rebel Wilson.

Catching Fire opens in Australia on November 21. It is the follow up to The Hunger Games, which grossed $32 million to be Australia’s fifth highest-grossing movie last year.

In the second film of the trilogy, Hunger Games winners Katniss (Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) embark on a victory tour of all the districts. Along the way, they sense a rebellion against President Snow (Donald Sutherland) may be brewing.

The trailer reveals President Snow is worried about Katniss becoming a leading figure in any such revolution: "She has become a beacon of hope for them," he says, "so she has to be eliminated."

Presidential offsider Plutarch Heavensbee (franchise newcomer Philip Seymour Hoffman) concurs: "I agree she should die, but in the right time, in the right way. Katniss Everdeen is a symbol - you don’t have to destroy her, just her image."

Heavensbee plots a negative PR campaign to stop Katniss being seen as a champion of the people and make her appear part of the ruling elite.

"They’re gonna hate her so much they might just kill her for you," he laughs.

Gale (Hemsworth) pops up to tell Katniss the people have to be brave enough to take the chance she has given them - and to plant a kiss on our heroine. Little sister Prim (Willow Shields) for one seems ready to join the rebellion.

The trailer contrasts lavish victory parties with violent demonstrations and ends with Katniss staring down the barrel of a gun and Snow declaring all Hunger Game victors must be exterminated.

Studio Lionsgate has released several images from the sequel in recent days, including these pictures showing Katniss with her sister Prim, a pensive and cold-looking Katniss, as well as President Snow with Plutarch Heavensbee.

Jennifer Lawrence was not in attendance at the MTV Movie Awards, where she won Best Kiss with Bradley Cooper for their smooch in Silver Linings Playbook.
