Sneaky detail we missed in Joaquin Phoenix’s 2019 film Joker

Eagle-eyed fans have pointed out a potential easter egg in Todd Phillips’ 2019 Oscar winning film Joker. Did you spot it?

It was one of the most critically divisive films of 2019.

But amid all the hype, particularly around Joaquin Phoenix’s award-winning portrayal of Arthur Fleck, many may have missed a cheeky easter egg hidden in Joker.

An eagle-eyed Reddit user picked up on the detail while re-watching the multiple Oscar nominated film, which is now available to stream on Foxtel Now, and it has fans wondering whether or not the moment was intentional.

In the opening scene where Arthur is seen doing his clown makeup at his vanity table, fans are convinced the mirror resembles the silhouette of Batman’s cowl and face.

The Reddit post racked up hundreds of comments, with one fan writing, “Man, if this was intentional and sort (of) like an Easter egg, then this was a damn good one.”

Another pointed out if you flip the picture upside down you can make out Batman’s lips. “You got it upside down, flip the picture over and you can even see the lips. And it makes for it to be upside down since the Joker is the antithesis of Batman.”

A third user wrote, “I just turned it upside down and screamed. It’s so perfect. HOW CAN THIS NOT BE INTENTIONAL.”

As fans would know from the legendary comics, Batman is the Joker’s arch rival, though Joker is very much focused on Arthur’s transformation into the clown prince of crime and subtly sets up Bruce Wayne’s impending journey toward the end of the film.

While director Todd Phillips hasn’t directly addressed the detail, he did say in an interview last year he doesn’t do easter eggs, and said if there was one in any of his films it was probably the art department trolling him.

“I don’t do Easter eggs. Any Easter eggs anybody finds is a mistake. I don’t understand,” he told Collider, adding if viewers spotted any subtle references in Joker it was probably the “art department sneaking something in that would make me crazy if I knew about it”.
