Oscar-winner Mo’Nique reveals the sinister side of winning an Academy Award for the movie Precious
SHE collected a string of awards including the Oscar for her powerhouse performancce in Precious. So why is Mo’Nique no longer welcome in Hollywood?
OSCAR-winning actress Mo’Nique claims she was snubbed by Hollywood because she didn’t campaign for her Academy Award — and won anyway.
The Precious star, 47, said she refused to schmooze or attend parties in an effort to claim her Best Supporting Actress gold statue, prompting the industry to turn its back on her for not “playing the game”.
“You want me to campaign for an award — and I say this with all the humility in the world — but you want me to campaign for an award that I didn’t ask for,” Mo’Nique told The Hollywood Reporter.
“What I understood was that when I won that Oscar, things would change in all the ways you’re saying: it should come with more respect, more choices and more money.”
But Mo’Nique said that wasn’t the case for her and she was overlooked for other movie roles after she won, and even had some taken away from her.
She said Precious director Lee Daniels told her she had been “blackballed” by Hollywood for not campaigning, the New York Daily News reports.
“I got a phone call from Lee Daniels maybe six or seven months ago. And he said to me, ‘Mo’Nique, you’ve been blackballed’,” Mo’Nique told hollywoodreporter.com.
“And I said, ‘I’ve been blackballed? Why have I been blackballed?’”
“And he said, ‘Because you didn’t play the game’.”
Hollywood’s awards shows have long been accused of recognising actors who campaign hard for votes.
So how much of is really about talent?
Mo’Nique said her win showed that stars don’t have to schmooze to be recognised.
“They (the Academy) said, ‘You know what? We’re going to judge the performance, not how many parties she can come to’,” Mo’Nique said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
That year, she beat out Anna Kendrick, Vera Farmiga, Penélope Cruz and Maggie Gyllenhaal in the Best Supporting Actress category — an award presented to her by the late Robin Williams.
This year’s Oscars will be handed out in Los Angeles on Monday, with Emma Stone (Birdman), Patricia Arquette (Boyhood), Laura Dern (Wild), Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game) and Meryl Streep (Into the Woods) all nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
