Wild Mountain Thyme’s truly bizarre plot twist has the internet astounded
There are plot twists, and then there’s … what happens in the middle of Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan’s new romance. WARNING: Spoilers!
When the first official trailer for upcoming drama film Wild Mountain Thyme debuted last month, there was much snickering from some parts of the internet.
While the film is set in a rural Irish farming community, many who watched the trailer noted the less-than-stellar Irish accents of stars including the British Emily Blunt, American Christopher Walken and, most confusingly, Jamie Dornan, who is actually Irish.
Accents aside, the trailer makes it look like a rollicking tale of Irish romance: Blunt plays headstrong farmer Rosemary, who has her heart set on winning her neighbour Anthony’s (Dornan’s) love. There’s one problem: Anthony “seems to have inherited a family curse, and remains oblivious to his beautiful admirer”.
Turns out, ropey Irish accents might be the least of the film’s problems for viewers.
One new review for the film published this week breaks a cardinal rule of reviewing, giving away Wild Mountain Thyme’s major plot twist.
Writing for website Pajiba, reviewer Jason Adams gives fair warning, explaining why he’s about to break from tradition and spoil the movie’s biggest secret: “It’s the sort of thing that must be stated out loud (or in print), screamed from the highest mountain, lest one starts believing it is they who have in fact gone mad. You, my friends, have not gone mad. This happens.”
Following Adams’ lead, consider this your big ol’ spoiler warning – if you don’t want to know the Wild Mountain Thyme plot twist, do not read any further.
OK.
Are you sitting down?
Late in the film, Dornan’s character Anthony finally confesses to Rosemary why he’s just not that into her. This is his aforementioned “curse”: Anthony … believes he is a honey bee.
Yes, you read right. Jamie Dornan plays an Irish farmer who believes himself to be a honey bee.
Australian writer Jenna Guillaume shared a brief clip of “big reveal” as part of a hilarious Twitter thread as she watched the truly bizarre-sounding film:
MAJOR SPOILER WARNING

Crap video but I cannot witness this alone.
Weâve been waiting for an hour and 20 minutes to find out why Jamie Dornan wonât just bang/marry Emily Blunt. Sheâs accused him of being gay and questioned if he was in love with a donkey.
And now... pic.twitter.com/0l4FdYeiZC
Slate reports that even weirder than Anthony’s revelation is Rosemary’s reaction: She processes the news remarkably quickly, insisting it’s not enough to keep them apart.
And they all live happily ever after, I guess? Well, perhaps not ever after, given the average lifespan of a honey bee is six weeks.
This major spoiler has certainly piqued interest in the film online: a twee Irish romance is one thing, but a twee Irish romance with a protagonist who believes he’s an insect? Now that’s a must-watch!

I have just become aware of the Wild Mountain Thyme twist/reveal and I am losing it. I cannot believe there is something more ridiculous than the accents, dialogue and unidentifiable time period.
