A shock ending turned the Marvel universe on its head and left Tom Holland with a major problem.

WARNING: AVENGERS: ENDGAME SPOILERS

It’s the question all Marvel fans want to know the answer to: what’s an Avengers movie going to be like without Tony Stark?

Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man has been a larger than life character in the Marvel world pretty much since its inception, but the billionaire is sadly no more after sacrificing himself to save the universe in Avengers: Endgame.

Nowhere will Downey’s absence be felt more than in the next Avengers instalment of Spider-Man Far From Home, which hits Australian cinemas this Tuesday.

In it Peter Parker (Tom Holland) grapples with the death of his mentor alongside a grieving world.

Doing his best to return to normal life by going on a school excursion to Europe, Peter is thrust back into the Marvel world by the arrival of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), a superhero from another earth.

It’s the first Marvel outing for Holland without Downey in tow. The English actor was largely unknown when he was first cast as Spider-Man alongside the Iron Man star in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.

Holland went on to star alongside Downey in three more Marvel movies; Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, with the two becoming somewhat of a package deal for comic fans.

On the phone to news.com.au from Los Angeles, Holland said a Downey-free Spider-Man film had been a challenge.

“Do you know what, it’s not as easy as what it used to be,” Holland said.

“Because as a young actor I used to have the freedom to kind of talk to him, and ask him questions about the process of making these crazy movies. Now obviously I can still ring him up, but I don’t have that kind of immediate connection being on set.

“I miss him and I loved working (with him). And I think everyone on set noticed a difference without having him.

“But he’s left his legacy behind for us to take and run with and hopefully we are going to do him proud and do the best job possible.”

Replacing Tony in Far From Home is Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), however, their dynamic is less father and son to say the least.

“It’s an interesting one because Peter Parker gets on with everyone, he’s friends with everybody but then in this film him and Nick Fury really don’t get along,” Holland said.

Fortunately in real life Holland and Jackson did get on, with the English actor bonding with the veteran star over a shared hobby.

“He was a lovely guy, I was a little bit nervous meeting him when we started working together, but he was really kind,” Holland said.

“We bonded over golf, we became really good friends over golf and I’m just really lucky at the age of 22 I was able to work with one of the industry’s greats.”

With Far From Home the first cab off the rank following the earth-shattering success of Endgame, Holland admits he is feeling the pressure.

“It’s really exciting and it’s also really daunting, Avengers was the biggest movie of all time I think, or will be shortly,” he said.

But despite Endgame being a tough act to follow, Holland believes Far From Home will be a satisfying next instalment for Marvel fans.

“I think that (Endgame) is a really heavy film, it’s a tough film to watch at times, it’s so emotional,” he said.

“Our film is the perfect pick me up for the MCU (Marvel Comics Universe), I think fans will really enjoy the more lighthearted side of our film. It will be a nice way to get back into the momentum of these momentous MCU movies.”
