Everything Marvel revealed at San Diego Comic-Con
MARVEL was very busy at San Diego Comic-Con, the biggest geekfest in the world. Fans were frothing, and here’s why.
THE world’s biggest geek-fest, San Diego Comic-Con, is the perfect place for film and TV studios to promote their upcoming projects.
The friendly environment of adoring fans means anything they say is met with adulation and the good kind of frenzy. And Marvel being the mega-franchise it is, they had a lot to show off, for both its film and TV properties. There was a bevy of new footage and announcements for Marvel fans to froth over.
THOR: RAGNAROK
We’ve known for a while that Hulk will be in the next Thor movie, which both explains why he was absent for the events of Captain America: Civil War and the fact it is just an awesome team-up.
We now also know that the Hulk will be donning his iconic Gladiator outfit from the comics at some point during the film and that this strongly supports the theory that Hulk’s storyline in Ragnarok will come from the “Planet Hulk” comics.

There was also a funny video about what Thor and Hulk got up to while the rest of the Avengers were fighting their Civil War but we can probably assume that it was a non-canon entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Comic-Con audiences were also treated to a look at Cate Blanchett as Hela but that image hasn’t made it to the interwebs yet.
Thor: Ragnarok will be released in Australia in October 2017.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2
The two major Guardians revelations at Comic-Con are who Kurt Russell and Elizabeth Debicki will be playing in the upcoming sequel. Russell will be Ego, a living planet and Star Lord’s (Chris Pratt) father while Debicki’s character is Ayesha, leader of the Sovereign people.

Fans also found out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will pick up only a few months after the first movie and that Star Lord is now famous across the universe thanks to his escapades.
They’re also building a Guardians of the Galaxy theme park ride at Disneyland (of course).
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released in Australia in April 2017.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING
Tom Holland has already proven his chops as Spidey in Captain America: Civil War and there are more than a few pundits who can’t wait to see him on screen again in the red bodysuit. Holland came out on stage with director Jon Watts to show off new footage (which has not made its way online yet) which revealed the villain will be Vulture.

Watts said Homecoming is a straight-up high school movie about a 15-year-old kid. If it has any of the wit of Holland’s scenes in Civil War, it may be the most anticipated MCU film in the pipeline.
People in the audience described the footage as reminiscent of John Hughes teen flicks and Paul Feig/Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks. Amazing.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is due for release in July 2017.
CAPTAIN MARVEL
After a couple of months of speculation, Marvel has confirmed Oscar winner Brie Larson will be Captain Marvel, star of the first female-led MCU movie.

Captain Marvel is currently scheduled for release in March 2019.
DOCTOR STRANGE
Benedict Cumberbatch, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton all popped in to talk about the next Marvel movie to be released.
More importantly, Marvel chose the occasion as the premiere for the second Doctor Strange trailer. The new trailer gives us a more detailed look at the mysticism in a movie universe that’s been dominated by technology up until now. There are some very impressive Inception-esque sequences.
Doctor Strange will be released in Australia on October 27, 2016.
BLACK PANTHER
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed) announced the movie will start shooting in January. It was also revealed Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o will take on the role of Nakia, a member of an order of warrior women. Nyong’o joins Larson, Swinton and Blanchett in the throng of Oscar women signing up to Marvel.

She will be joined by Danai Gurira as Okoye and Coogler collaborator Michael B. Jordan as villain Erik Killmonger (with a name like that, did he ever have a chance to be a white hat?).
Coogler described Black Panther as his most “personal movie to date”.
Black Panther will be released in February 2018.
LUKE CAGE
We were first introduced to the unbreakable Luke Cage in Jessica Jones as a love interest/side character, knowing he will have his own series later this year.
The first trailer, set to Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”, has just dropped and it looks like it will live up to the golden standard and tone set by Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
And in commentary that is ripe for our times, showrunner Cheo Hodaro Coker said the world is “ready for a bulletproof black man”.
Luke Cage season one will drop on Netflix on September 30, 2016.
DEFENDERS
All the Marvel Netflix collaborations will be leading to this: The Defenders series, combining the arse-kicking powers of Daredevil (which has just been renewed for a third season), Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Marvel TV debuted this teaser. Get excited.
The Defenders will premiere on Netflix, most likely in 2017.
IRON FIST
Marvel and Netflix also released this first look teaser for Iron Fist, hinting at the origin of Danny Rand as a young plane crash survivor taken in by monks who train him to be the martial arts crimefighter we know him to be.
In the comics, Danny Rand/Iron Fist frequently teams up with Luke Cage.
Iron Fist will debut on Netflix, most likely in 2017.
AGENTS OF SHIELD
Agents of SHIELD’s big Comic-Con bombshell is season four will feature none other than Robbie Reyes (Gabriel Luna), aka Ghost Rider.
Head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb said season four will feature the series’ most ambitious story yet.

Agents of SHIELD airs in Australia on Foxtel.
LEGION
Not too much has been thrown about this new series from Marvel and US network FX. It centres on a superhero called Legion who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. But maybe he’s not as crazy as it seems because perhaps the voices he hears aren’t imaginary after all.
The series is created by Noah Fawley, who created the Fargo TV series.
Legion is expected to debut in 2017.
