Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – mid and post-credits scenes

As per Marvel tradition, there are two mid and post-credit scenes in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. You’ll want to stick around.

Maybe you’re still sitting in your cinema seat, having just googled to see if there would be any mid- and post-credit scenes or if you can make a beeline for the bathroom.

Well, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a Marvel movie so of course there are extra scenes. The only MCU movie that didn’t have one was Avengers: Endgame and the reason for that is in the title.

There are two scenes – one after the graphic credits and one at the very end, after the rolling credits. And if you really need to pee, there’s enough time to make it to the bathroom and back in between the two, assuming there’s not an enormous line-up.

So, now that you’ve either seen the two scenes and you either have questions or you were impatient, and you left and now need to know what you missed, here’s a breakdown.

Mid-credits scene – Who is Charlize playing?

Stephen Strange is walking down the street when a multiverse portal opens in front of him and out pops a mysterious blonde woman who says she needs his help.

Who is she? Obviously, Charlize Theron, who is finally in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With her aptitude for stunts and also just her general bad-arsery, Theron has felt like a missing piece for the MCU for a while.

But more importantly, who is the character she’s playing?

Apparently, the character is named Clea.

In the comics, Clea is from the Dark Dimension and is a niece of Dormammu. If you remember the first Doctor Strange movie, Strange defeated Dormammu in the Dark Dimension by trapping the entity in an endless time loop.

Maybe defeat is too strong a word – it’s more like Strange won a war of attrition and Dormammu agreed to retreat.

Back to the printed page, Clea and Stephen have a strong connection and he trained her in sorcery. Eventually they became romantically involved, going so far as to exchange rings that bonded them forever. She even took over as Sorcerer Supreme.

Will any of this come to pass in the MCU? Maybe. With the seeming resolution of Stephen’s relationship with Christine Palmer, it opens the door for him to look beyond, and those eyes may very well land on Clea.

And there’s no question Theron will be a formidable match and scene partner to Benedict Cumberbatch.

Post-credits scene – Bonus Bruce

This one’s just for fun. Bruce Campbell’s street vendor, who Strange magicked to punch himself for three weeks, is finally given a reprieve. In relief, he breaks the fourth wall with the audience and proclaims, “it’s over”. Get it?

For fans of director Sam Raimi, Campbell’s appearance in the MCU is an easter egg that works on a different level. The two have been friends since high school and Campbell starred in Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise, originally in the 30-minute Super-8 short that preceded the features.

Campbell is a stalwart in Raimi’s movies in some form, having cameo-ed in all three of Raimi’s Spider-Man movies, Darkman and Oz The Great And Powerful.

The scene doesn’t tease anything for the MCU, it’s just a nice bonus for any Raimi fans.
