Broadway hit Hamilton cuts out swearing to avoid R rating on Disney+

The movie version of a smash hit musical that fans wait years to see is about to be released but there is one detail that won’t make it to the small screen.

Is Disney Plus the 'Netflix Killer'?

Hamilton, the mega-Broadway musical hit, loves a good F-bomb, but creator Lin-Manuel Miranda had to make a few adjustments for the film’s debut on Disney+ next month.

A movie version of the popular musical, about one of America’s founding fathers Alexander Hamilton that has become a global phenomenon, will drop on the family-friendly streaming service in less than two weeks, and fans are wondering how similar the film will be to the long-running Broadway show.

When a fan asked Miranda on Twitter what changes would be coming to Hamilton on Disney+, the composer revealed how his show will look different for its small screen debut.

The version coming to streaming next month was originally taped at the Richard Rogers Theatre in New York in June 2016, and there have been some alterations to make the film more appropriate for younger audiences, Miranda revealed.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Disney+ version of Hamilton before it premieres on July 3.

Miranda is keeping the film version true to what happened onstage – there’s even intermission. None of the scenes will be cut or changed, but a very small amount of audio will be edited.

In a tweet thread today, Miranda assured fans, “you’re getting the whole show, every note & scene.” The only edits made to Hamilton on Disney+ will be to cover up language.

Disney+ will censor Hamilton twice to cut out foul language. Hamilton has the f-word in it three times, but the film version on Disney+ will censor two of those swears.

Miranda laid out the two instances where the word has been taken out of the film.

One is during the song Yorktown, about the pivotal battle between the American revolutionaries and British troops.

“In ‘Yorktown,’ there’s a mute over “I get the f**k back up again,” Miranda explained.

The second instance, in a song called Washington on Your Side will substitute a record scratch for the swear.

And that leaves one of the expletives in the show in a scene where Hamilton is confronted by the husband of a woman he has been having an affair with.

Hamilton earned a PG-13 rating because of its edits – with more than one use of the f word in a film, the Motion Picture Association of America automatically gives it a hard R rating, Miranda explained. So, to make the film more appropriate for Disney+, he changed some of the language.

“We have 3 ‘F***s’ in our show. So … I literally gave two f***s so the kids could see it,” Miranda explained.

The stage show is due to start in Sydney next year.
