The highly anticipated movie starring Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell has just revealed its first look trailer.

If you want a serious, sombre and dark biopic of Adolf Hitler, this will not be that movie.

If you want a bonkers and hilarious satire involving an imaginary Adolf Hitler played by a Jewish-Maori New Zealander, then step on up for Jojo Rabbit.

The bizarre-sounding project from Taika Waititi, the lauded director behind Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Boy, has released its first trailer and it looks every bit as zany as we were expecting.

Waititi plays Hitler, alongside cast members Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, Thomasin McKenzie (Leave No Trace) and British newcomer Roman Griffin Davis.

Jojo Rabbit is based on the book Caging Skies by Christine Leunens and Waititi also penned the script. The movie is being dubbed by the studio as an “anti-hate satire”.

Jojo Rabbit is the project Waititi went to work on after Thor: Ragnarok, which was praised for soft-rebooting the Marvel character with a wicked sense of humour.

Little is revealed during the teaser trailer, just giving a sense of the wacky tone and look of the movie, but Waititi has dropped some hints in the past 18 months.

During World War II, a lonely German boy (Davis) is desperate to be part of Hitler’s forces, but then discovers his secretly anti-Nazi mother Rosie (Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl Elsa (McKenzie) in their attic.

Bullied by his peers, Jojo invents an imaginary friend, Hitler.

Last week, it was confirmed Waititi will be returning to the Marvel franchise, tapped to direct Thor: Love and Thunder, which will feature a female Thor.

Jojo Rabbit will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival alongside a roster that includes Todd Phillips’ Joker, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, The Goldfinch big screen adaptation, Armando Iannucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and the Safdie brother’s Uncut Gems.

Jojo Rabbit will release in Australia on Boxing Day.
