Netflix debuts trailer for emotional personal drama Tigertail
We’re probably all feeling a little emotionally dented right now, so we should warn you that even the trailer for Tigertail might make you cry.
You can just tell Tigertail, an upcoming original film from Netflix, is going to make you cry.
Written and directed by American filmmaker Alan Yang, Tigertail is a semi-biographical drama inspired by his own father’s immigration story from Taiwan to the United States. The first trailer was released today.
Set across different timelines, the story starts with a young man, Pin-Jui (Hong-Chi Lee), in Taiwan who aspires to move to America. But when he does, it’s not with the woman he loves but an almost stranger.
Together, they have to navigate this new world to them.
In the present, an older Pin-Jui’s (Tzi Ma) relationship with his daughter (Christine Ko) is tested when they struggle to relate to each other.
If the trailer is anything to go by, Tigertail looks to be an emotional ride, the kind that will inspire audiences to pick up the phone and call their family, especially in these times of social distancing.
Tigertail follows a raft of US films telling a story from an Asian-American experience, including Crazy Rich Asians, Searching, Always Be My Maybe and The Farewell.
Among its credited cast are also Joan Chen, Hayden Szeto, Kunjue Li, Fiona Fu, James Saito and Australian Jessica Gomes.
John Cho was originally cast in the film, but it appears his scenes were cut during post-production. Cho is still an executive producer on Tigertail.
Tigertail is Yang’s feature directorial debut.
He is best known for his work as co-creator of Master of None with Aziz Ansari – the pair won an Emmy for Best Comedy Writing for the series.
Yang wrote for Parks & Recreation, also co-created Amazon Prime Video’s Forever and is an executive producer on Apple TV+ anthology series Little America.
Tigertail will be released on Netflix on April 10
