Knives Out releases star-studded first trailer

There are so many stars in this new movie from a Star Wars director, your jaw will drop.

Do you remember the last time a trailer for a new movie came out, and your jaw literally dropped as each cast member came on screen, each more exciting than the last?

Knives Out, Rian Johnson’s new movie, has released its first trailer and it is tantalisingly good.

With a cast that includes (*takes a breath*) Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lakeith Stanfield, Toni Collette, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Katherine Langford, Riki Lindhome and Ana de Armas, it’s a veritable feast of thespians.

Knives Out is a modern take on a classic country house mystery, a murder whodunnit set in a house that Agatha Christie would’ve been proud to describe on page.

A very suspicious set

When crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Plummer) is found dead soon after celebrating his 85th birthday, detective Elliot (Stanfield) arrives with an eccentric sleuth Benoit Blanc (Craig).

The suspects are Thrombey’s nearest and dearest, so probably everyone who had a motive to do him in.

The trailer looks quirky, intriguing and a little bit mad, with the assembled clearly enjoying their chance to ham it up in a murder mystery, especially Evans who’s playing a character VERY DIFFERENT to Captain America.

Not Steve Rogers

Before Johnson hit the mainstream with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he was best known as an indie filmmaker whose movies included Looper, The Brothers Bloom and Brick.

Brick was Johnson’s debut feature, a confident and fresh take on a film noir mystery set at a high school and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so he has form in taking a staid formula and turning it into something clever and contemporary.

If Johnson can bring to Knives Out what he did to Brick, then it’s very exciting indeed.
