Jumanji: The Next Level trailer teases new sequel’s big twist
The first official trailer for Jumanji: Next Level has been released, and it hints at a major plot twist for our four heroes.
Can Jumanji: The Next Level live up to its title?
The action-packed sequel’s first trailer has dropped, and it features the return of stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan (Avengers: Endgame) as their popular video game avatars. The foursome is flanked by Alex Wolff, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman and Morgan Turner recreating their roles as the swashbuckling quartet’s real-life counterparts.
And don’t worry, fanboys and girls, pop heart-throb Nick Jonas is back. Newbies to the franchise include Crazy Rich Asians breakout Awkwafina and veteran scene-stealers Danny DeVito and Danny Glover.
The big twist revealed in the trailer: The Dannys do a “grumpy old men” act before morphing into Hart and Johnson’s avatars, resulting in high-jinks that gives all four ample opportunity to show off their comedic prowess.
Still, The Next Level has quite the international box office tally to top to live up to that title: 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a surprise blockbuster, raking in $964 million worldwide, setting a $404 million domestic record for Sony Pictures and surpassing Spider-Man to become the studio’s highest-grossing US release — ever.
Director Jake Kasdan’s The Next Level is the fourth entry in the Jumanji film franchise after the classic Robin Williams/Kirsten Dunst Jumanji in 1995; a disappointing 2005 spin-off/sequel, Zathura: A Space Adventure, featuring then-little-known Kristen Stewart (Twilight) and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games); and 2017’s Welcome to the Jungle.
Jumanji: The Next Level will be released in December.
